Ready to build your backcountry confidence and take the guesswork out of your adventures?

 Join us for a practical, hands-on Level 1 Navigation Course set in the lush forests and diverse terrain of Kurth Kiln Regional Park. Whether you’re a bushwalker, trail runner or aspiring adventurer – this course is your gateway to becoming confident with a map and compass.

🧭 What You’ll Learn:

  • Navigate on & off track with a map & compass
  • Understand the features, index and meanings of a topographic map
  • Plot and calculate bearings
  • Plot a location on a map
  • Celestial Navigation
  • Pacing / distance estimation
  • Reading Map to ground
  • Plan, prepare and walk an off track route using 6 digit UTM co-ordinates
  • Conduct a resection aka finding your location when you are lost
  • Reduced visibility navigation
  • Understand the Global Positioning System and GPS devices

🏕️ Accommodation & Meals:

 Stay at the beautiful Gilwell Park bunkhouse – with hot showers, shared kitchen, and group spaces.

BYO meals or self-cater with access to all facilities.

 Our programs are led by fully qualified guides holding internationally recognised certifications, backed by a lifetime of real-world experience. We’re passionate professionals who live, play and work in the outdoors every day.

🦄 Meet your instructors

 Paddy Howlett is an ex military veteran that is a qualified navigation instructor with an aviation and rescue helicopter background. Paddy has also competed at World Series level as an adventure racer and National Level in Rogaining. His latest international adventure in 2023, racing a tandem canoe 1600km from Canada to Alaska through some of the remotest wilderness in the world tested his map building and navigation skills to the limits.

Kelly van den Berg is a mountain guide and Nordic ski instructor, outdoor educator and expedition medic that has participated in teams on many wilderness adventures both here and overseas in many varied environments from the deserts of the Sahara to alpine ascents. Kelly was Paddy’s race partner and navigator for the Yukon 1000 expedition race in 2023.
